Birding in Wolfville, Nova Scotia
Our family b-day escape took place in Blomidon Nova Scotia on thanksgiving weekend. Autumn is a delicious time of the year in this neck of the woods. Harvest season is thriving, colours are popping and you can catch the tail end of birding season. Upon landing, we headed straight for the market and what happened from there was just marvelous!
Parking facilities of the Wolfville market adjoin the public library - was delighted to learn that we can now take bikes out along with books. How progressive.
The railroad path behind the library is also very pleasant for a stroll. We stopped to take in the views at the historical site and met a friendly local soul who gave us insight on eagle watching points and events.
Our chatting was put on pause when miraculously two Bald Eagles came sweeping though - instatrance - amazed by how our naked eyes were capturing the stunning details. The eagles were feeding on the fish in the Minas Basin and this rare encounter made our trip. I had the opportunity of seeing another eagle at Blomidon beach later on but that is another story in itself.
Took a bike out the following day and followed the farmers dike to Port Williams which was adorned with Great Blue Herons and fantastic views.
We then ventured the rolling hills of Starrs Point where we made two precious stops. The first was to bite into a fresh honeycrisp apple at one of the many orchards and the second was to pop in a honey producer. We were in luck as he was harvesting and was generous at introducing us to the process and offering tastings of honey and honeycomb! We learnt that Nova Scotian honey is distinct due to the the influx of berries as pollinating source.
Wolfville is a lovely cycling and birding hub with so much opportunity! On a side note, its wineries remain to be progressively thriving and a must experience for everyone. Read more about this in my previous adventure: The Maritime Way.
May adventures and birds be with you in 2019!
