5 Must-Sees in Puglia!

5 Must-Sees in Puglia!

Missed my flight from Mykonos to Puglia - that’s another story and nevertheless nothing was going to stop me as I arrived in Bari very early the next morning. Paola & Francesco, my airb’n’b host, greeted me with kindness and the tiny home was even cuter than described - Scored! The sun was blasting - scorching, and my agenda was filled: Hello Puglia! A short and modern seaside escape / two full days and two nights and an itinerary set to beat the heatwave.

Trani

Taking the train in Italy is a pure delight! Since Bari is a hub, there are many trains that depart to popular neighbouring towns throughout the day. You can purchase your tickets at many self service stands in the station and you must validate your ticket before departure. My first stop was Trani. I arrived around noon, and quickly realized that the entire town was napping! A few cafés, a fisherman stand and some touristy restaurants were open but shops and even the town’s main attraction - the Cathedral, were closed and the streets - barren. It was eerie yet romantic as I had the town to myself. Discovered some form of life on the rocky platforms that cradled the sea. Sunbathers and swimmers gathered to celebrate the afternoon. I left Trani feeling a deep desire to return to experience its liveliness.

Giovinazzo

I chose Giovinazzo for its reputation as a beach haven. It was much smaller than Trani with more vacationy vibes. There were no beaches but rather rocky sea passages where people lounged and swam. I ordered a Spritz at a cafe/bar and asked, what time does the city liven up? The waiter answered: 9pm. This got me to imagine my next trip - perhaps use this as my main hub and reorg my schedule to be more active at night.

Bari

I quickly returned to Bari to freshen up before exploring the old town. My instincts led me down a small path where i discovered sweet nonnas selling their home made orecchiette pasta. The city was bursting with activity and its inhabitants cheerful and helpful. Dined at a delightful wine bar suggested by Paola called Il Panee le Rose (Via Cairoli 124) and called it a night. The next morning I transferred myself to the loveliest boutique hotel and breakfast spread: Hotel Imago.

Polignano a Mare

This town was my main inspiration having seen so many beautiful reportages on instagram - and the reality did not deceive. I walked aimlessly discovering one view after another, lunching at a dream hangout called cactus (mint across the street is also charming!) and treating myself to frozen espresso cream. There was liveliness throughout the day and loads of happy Italian vacationers.

Monopoli

I ended the day in Monopoli, which had a similar beat than Trani with a bit more travellers. The views were stunning and you could feel the ancient vibes. Lots of restaurants to discover and even though I was not there to explore the sunset, I felt that the city would light up in a magical way.

Puglia took over my heart and left me wanting more- so different than Rome, Venice and Florence - less crowds, and somewhat more authentic and relaxed. The food and wine assortments are also unique in this region and the people are friendly and stylish. Be prepared to chill in the afternoon, rent bikes and bring them with you on the train, stay out late to get a deeper experience, all noted for next trip!

Also, would reco you make this adventure at least one week and ideally a month - in the Spring or Fall - perhaps include Ostuni, Lecce, Alberobello and Matera?

Ciao for now!
