5 Reasons to Choose Syros

5 Reasons to Choose Syros

As I count down the days of my beach hopping/hiking adventure in Corfu, I can't help but reminisce on my last trip to Greece on the beautiful island of Syros in June 2019. We chose Syros because it was on the lesser-known side yet considered a gem amongst locals. The Greeks were under austerity measures right before a critical election and the end of a low travel season. Hence, along with the lovely locals, we had the island almost to ourselves. I was thrilled - and here's why I recommend you choose Syros.

#1: SECLUDED BEACHES

My friend Johanna and I based ourselves for nine nights in Megas Gialos at an Airbnb that I think has since changed owners. I loved this location as we had access to a charming beach 5 minutes on foot but an even more secluded beach 15 minutes away: Ampela Beach. We journeyed further to BluEros Luxury Villa, where we discovered the most magical secluded cove.

Swimming at Ampela was divine, with turquoise crystal clear waters at the perfect temperature. Our daily nature strolls were most pleasant with sweet-smelling flowers and herbs, whimsical butterflies and a soft wind that caressed our souls.

Equally memorable was our trek to Delfini beach - white pebbles, heavenly waters and once again very few bodies in sight.

More popular beaches such as Galissas, and Finikas were also appreciated for their sandy stretches and delicious calm waves. Still, the trek over the hill to Ambela and the lazy afternoons on the tiny deserted rocky beach is what struck me the most and so needed to decompress in that period of my life.

#2: DELICIOUS MEALS

The other great thing about Ampela was that it was served by a small taverna ( Ambéla) with the most delicious fried zucchinis, dips, and Saganaki (fried cheese with local honey). Our lodging also had a friendly taverna on the corner (The Talaras) where the owner welcomed us and what sometimes seemed to be the whole town for local fare. Apart from these experiences, I remember having the most delicious Gigantes Plaki (white bean) dish at Agrotourism Women Cooperative of Syros "to Kastri".

#3: YOU DON'T NEED A CAR

Car rentals in Europe can be pricey, and if you are not used to driving in the area, it adds a layer of stress that can put a damper on your trip. We found that the bus system in Syros was so practical, on time and good for the budget. We relied on the bus to visit Ermoupoli and nearby beaches and had no complaints. Syros is unique in this way, as many Greek islands do not offer the “no car” luxury.

#4: INSPIRING CITY CENTER

Ermoupoli is the most beautiful capital and home to Greece's main port. A leading commercial and industrial center, it houses lovely boutiques, art galleries and delicious restaurants. We treated ourselves to an evening at Avant Garden with delicious vegetarian meals, fancy cocktails and the most charming and modern ambiance.

#5: EASY ACCESS & EASY TO PAIR

Most people like to bundle Greek islands to get a varied experience. Given my slow travel style, I did not do this intentionally for the Greece part of my trip, and I recommend that you pair it with Tinos and Mykonos. Flights to Mykonos are plentiful and cheap. In my case, I flew to Bari next and did a short spurt in Puglia. Be careful to read your boat itinerary, as you may stop over to Tinos instead of going directly to Syros. I learned the hard way in a desperate attempt to escape choppy seas.
